No one evaporated through any walls in this movie. It is not a horror movie or a ghost movie, and why so many people think that it is that type of movie is beyond me. So be sure to go check out this movie now that you know the boogie-man wont’ get you.
Shutter Island is what I needed the last few reviews, a great movie that didn’t have any bullshit hype or a lame ass plot line. Martin Scorsese is a master at his craft and has been extremely fortunate that Leonardo DiCaprio has not been a shitty actor for him in many of his projects, and Shutter Island is one of them.
The movie takes place in the 1950’s as a pair of US Marshals are investigating the disappearance of one of the patients at the maximum security mental asylum known as Shutter Island. Along the way Teddy (DiCaprio) is tortured by his memories of his past and by the strange goings on that are happening around him during his stay at the facility. What turns from a simple Hide and Seek mystery begins to turn into a total brain smash up and Teddy has to figure out just WTF is going on around him.
This movie had a lot going for it and it was a great film. The plot was tip-top and kept you interested the whole way through. The amount of suspense with this story was just perfect, no boogie-men to scare you or boo-hoo ghosts but just actual people and situations where the abnormal is quite freaky enough. The flash back scenes are really well done and didn’t get confusing at all (well….you’ll see). I always seem to have an issue with movies that use flashbacks to establish a movie but Shutter Island only uses them as a tool into finding out about Teddy’s past and possibly his future. The cinematography was spot on for this movie, everything felt as if it was actually happening in the 1950s and there was no cheese use of present references or mannerisms of today’s culture.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys a good crime/suspense/thriller. It is one of the better movies I have seen in a while and really think it is worth the price of admission. I just hope the movie doesn’t randomly stop on you…..twice. But it’s ok; they gave me a free movie ticket, great job empire! I will see you again soon.
4 Stars + :-) for length and amount of hype
