Its finally here, Dances with Aliens is out in theaters…..Ahh sorry, I mean Avatar….Ya.
James Cameron’s big new picture is out and ready for you to experience. I went to see this move in IMAX 3D which in my opinion was probably the best way to see it, all 2 hours and 40 mins of it.
Cameron has openly said that he “acknowledged the film’s connection with Dances With Wolves, where a battered soldier finds himself drawn to the tribal culture he was initially fighting against”, and that is very easy to see in this film however the story is a bit different as it is the future and some of the main plot lines are completely its own.
The movie was originally designed in the 1990’s but Cameron said he will wait to tell the story once technology has caught up with his idea….and I am very glad he did. The stereoscopic cameras use to make the 3D movie was amazing, now it’s not 3D in the sense of things coming at you, but more in the way the human eye can see depth. It was really cool to see. This movies visuals are probably one of the best, if not the best I have seen in many many years. The amount of detail and time that went into this film is amazing and really keeps you entertained throughout the length of this movie.
The story, like I said before, has been done before and is pretty basic in its complexity. For me the only issues I have with the movie are in the story and the amount of things that are either missed, don’t make sense or left me wondering what was the point of that..Example: The year is 2135 (or something) and to blow up a sacred place of the natives they pack a bunch of “explosives” together with a timer and drop them out of plane…Don’t they have smart bombs or nukes in the future? Why do you have to go all Wile-e-coyote on them?
At the end of the day (well a few days later) I have found myself wanting to go see it again as it was such a visual experience and with a “not too bad” story line. I don’t think I could go see it in normal 2D though as the IMAX 3D was so amazing. If you have the chance to go see this movie, you should!
3.5 stars*
